Meta Description: Discover the history of PMEX, from its establishment in 2002 and launch in 2007 to its development as Pakistan’s regulated futures exchange.
The Pakistan Mercantile Exchange (PMEX) has played an important role in the development of Pakistan’s commodity and futures markets. The exchange was incorporated on April 20, 2002, originally with the aim of creating a modern, technology-driven marketplace for commodity futures.
PMEX began its journey as the National Commodity Exchange Limited (NCEL). The exchange commenced operations in May 2007 as a fully electronic commodity futures exchange with nationwide reach. Its early products included gold futures, followed by other commodities and financial products.
In 2011, NCEL changed its name to Pakistan Mercantile Exchange Limited (PMEX), reflecting the exchange's expanding role in Pakistan's financial and commodity markets.
PMEX is now Pakistan's only regulated futures exchange and offers trading across areas including metals, agriculture, energy, and financial commodities. It operates under the regulatory framework of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).
Over the years, PMEX has continued to invest in technology, market infrastructure, investor education, and access to futures markets, making its history closely connected with the modernization of commodity trading in Pakistan.
